Take control of tiny birds wielding big bats in this simple turn based RPG
Creating Birds with bats.
Players control a Cockatiel and a Budgie as they face off against their rivals Sparrow and Pigeon. Using an Action-timer based turn system, a characters turn is decided by their individual speed stat, Once active a character can attack with both physical and magic, defend against their next incoming attack or heal themselves for a portion of their max HP.
Created for Mini Jam 99, Birds with Bats was created as part of a duo with my primary responsibilities being Programming and design. My partner for this project took on the role of Artist and Animator, providing the cute stylistic art used in the 2.5D scenes. The goal of this project for both me and my partner was to try something completely new and out of our comfort zones for a 72hr game jam, An RPG battle system was something i'd never attempted to design or create at the time of this project so the task itself was quite daunting to begin with, and my partner had yet to work primarily as an artist on a project. With a 7 hour time difference we were aware we would likely encounter some issues through the course of the 72hrs, however we ultimately created a very concise and clear example of our original image for the game concept. Lacking some polish in areas, the project itself was thankfully not over scoped, with our main intention for the 72hr period being to create the general game play loop of the RPG battle system, with stretch goals being to create transitions between different battles.
The project itself requires some clear polish in areas, and feedback from the Game Jam submission made it clear that despite the simplified nature of the games controls, some users still felt that the project didn't communicate itself well initially. While development on the project is not currently a main focus right now, an update is currently in progress that features some additional standard features like Game menus and a How to Play. Work is also planned to improve some of the features that didn't get much focus during the jam such as SFX and Scenes.
